Owens… “The Lord of Darkness”
American-born, Owens is a Paris-based designer whose gothic aesthetic has earned him the nickname “The Lord of Darkness”. His pioneering creations have influenced dozens of designers with his particular take on the fashion-sportswear hybrid look and his androgynous style. His preferred colour, in everything from his signature leather jackets to iconic shoes, is black.
Owens dropped out of Otis College of Art and Design to pursue a course in pattern cutting at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, and ended up cutting patterns for illegal copies of designer clothing. His fortunes took a turn for the better in 1994, however, when he launched his own label, selling solely to Charles Gallay, the hip LA retailer.
He scaled the heights of the fashion industry in 2001, after French Vogue featured an image of Kate Moss wearing one of his leather jackets. The following year he was made artistic director at the French fur company Revillon, and he made the move from Los Angeles to Paris.
The designer has received two awards from Council of Fashion Designers of America; the Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent in 2002 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. In 2007, he received the Cooper-Hewitt Design Award for Fashion Design, and his fearless approach to style was also recognised that year with the Fashion Group International's Rule Breaker Award.
